Kahana, Alaska Kahana ( ʔe-ka-ʔa-na) is a city in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 2,716 at the 2010 census, down from 2,975 at the 2000 census. Geography Kahana is located on the south side of Kodiak Island at (58.572379, -159.938191). The junction of U.S. Highways 3 and 101 and the Seward Highway runs through the city, leading east to Seward and west to Halibut Cove. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of, of which are land and, or 23.32%, are water. History The original name for Kahana was Salmon, after the salmon spawning runs in the nearby Khana River. Shortly after World War II, the Navy relocated an airfield in the area and renamed the base Kahana Field. The early airport was a place to set crash fire zones for aircraft and a general dumping ground for military personnel. The town was named after the Kahana village of the native Alutiiq people. When Alaskan native people were relocated from their native villages to the Point Hope, Point Lay, and Seward areas, the government renamed Kahana "Hannah" and the new village "Hannah". In 1964, when the government decided to restore the original name of Kahana, it was also decided to also restore the old name of Hannah and rename it "Kahana".
